November 14, 2021 from 12:00pm – 5:00pm
The topic of this year’s conference, Climate Justice, is at the core of PA IPL’s mission. We seek to inspire and mobilize people of faith and conscience to take bold and just action on climate change. This must start and continue with work in and with the frontline communities most directly and immediately affected by climate change.
Our keynote speaker will be Rev. Bishop Marcia Dinkins, Executive Director of Ohio Interfaith Power & Light. Marcia has been recognized by Sojourners as one of the 10 Women of Faith Leading the Change Ahead and is involved with the Black Appalachian Coalition and many other organizations on the forefront of climate justice.
Due to ongoing concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic and our concern for the PA IPL community we have decided to take the conference entirely online. This means barriers of attendance due to travel are much lower and we can embrace the local knowledge and focus on local concerns in the format of a distributed conference. The three regions we will focus on in this year’s conference are Harrisburg (Central PA), Philadelphia (Eastern PA), and Pittsburgh (Western PA).
This afternoon remote format will allow individuals from across the state and beyond to choose which of the concurrent sessions they wish to attend. Each session will be presented by speakers actively working in their areas of expertise.
Harrisburg/Central PA Sessions:
1. Rural Creation Care as it pertains to large scale tree planting and the removal of invasive species as well as floodplain mitigation and land restoration.
2. Faith Journeys in Climate Justice is a workshop where individuals will share and discuss how they come to this work and how we might best communicate with congregations and individuals of faith to invite them to join us.
Philadelphia/Eastern PA Sessions:
1. Urban Creation Care as it pertains to the urban tree canopy and mitigating the heat sink effect.
2. Advocacy and Policy Issues in Eastern PA.
Pittsburgh/Western PA Sessions:
1. Urban Creation Care as it pertains to urban farming and planting at home.
2. Advocacy in Action in Western PA.
While live viewing will be Sunday, November 14 from 12:00pm – 5:00pm, the Conference will be recorded, presentation slides will be available, and attendees will be able to access videos from all three regions at their leisure after it’s over.
The conference is tomorrow so make sure to register today and mark your calendar. Registration for the conference is online at this link. The conference will include talks, workshops, and panels on: Creation Care related to urban heat sinks and tree canopy as well as flood mitigation and carbon sequestration; Climate Justice advocacy and policy; Faith based communication and organizing strategies for Climate Justice.
