“Every Nation on the planet, except the US, has recognized the dire threat of climate change and is committed to carbon reductions… Currently, the state of Pennsylvania has fully embraced…frack gas which is just as big a threat to our climate as coal. We must redirect their attention to advance clean energy and clean energy jobs. Working together, we can change our future for our children and their children.” — Larry Schweiger.

Sermon and Faith Forum: Dr. Matthew Sleeth

History page pic2St. Thomas’ Church in Fort Washington, PA is welcoming Dr. Matthew Sleeth* of Blessed Earth as a guest preacher on May 17.  They would be pleased to welcome PA IPL members and friends to join them for the service.  Read the Sleeths’ backstory before you go check your calendar.  The 10:00 service is Holy Eucharist Rite II (for the Episcopalians out there).

If you would like to attend the Sunday Forum (also with Matthew Sleeth: “Living 24/6 in a 24/7 world”) at 11:15, please RSVP to PA IPL by 5/10, so that we can share numbers with the folks at St. Thomas’ — they want to be sure to have enough chairs set up.

Can’t make it to Fort Washington, PA on a Sunday morning?  We have Dr. Sleeth’s 24/6 video andbook about the restorative practice of sabbath-keeping in our library for PA IPL members to borrow — schedule a viewing and discussion in your community or congregation.  Blessed Earth’s series of energy-reducing tip-sheets for many situations are accessible, printable, and gathered conveniently in one place.

*A former emergency room physician, Dr. Matthew Sleeth felt like he was straightening deck chairs on the Titanic saving a patient at a time while the whole ship (Earth) was going down.

Together with his wife and two children, he began to bring his lifestyle in line with his values, cutting back on their fossil fuel by two thirds and electricity use by nine tenths. Following a new calling, Dr. Sleeth resigned from his position as chief of the medical staff and director of the ER to teach, preach, and write about faith and the environment throughout the country.

Dr. Sleeth is a graduate of George Washington University School of Medicine and has two post-doctoral fellowships. He is the author of Serve God, Save the Planet: A Christian Call to Action (Zondervan, April 2007), the introduction to the Green Bible (2008, HarperOne), and 24/6: A Prescription for a Healthier, Happier Life.
