Main Line IPL Monthly Chapter Meeting – May 2023

Plastic Free July, Can We Make it a Regional Effort?
For our May 22nd program, we will learn about this international effort to cut back, or cut out, the use of single use plastics.
In 2023, about 380 million metric tons of plastic—about the weight of all of humanity living today—will be created from liquid fossil fuels and thousands of chemical additives, many of them known carcinogens. Much of this new plastic will enjoy a single use (that plastic bottle of water? That vegetable wrapped in cellophane at the grocery store?) before heading to a landfill (less than 10% is recycled), where it will not break down for hundreds of years or longer. The health consequences of this plastic is staggering, to humans and to all of life on earth.
Plastic Free July is an international effort, one might say a movement, started in Australia, to get people across the globe to cut back, or cut out, the use of single use plastics. Last year 140 million people took the challenge. This year, can we up that number? Can we make this a regional effort?
Our speaker will be Pam Kosty, Environmental Justice co-chair at the Main Line Unitarian Church in Devon, and a member of Main Line’s PA IPL. She will share her perspective on the importance of individual actions linked with group actions—the building of a culture and a community willing to face our environmental crisis together.
