My wife and I moved to Central Pennsylvania 19 years ago when I took a job in the statistics department at Penn State, and we’ve raised our two daughters in this beautiful area.  This year will be my third time riding to Washington DC with the PAIPL group, which means that with this ride I’ll catch up with my older daughter Molly, who has also ridden three times.  While many aspects of this year’s trip will undoubtedly be the same as in previous years, this year will bring some new dimensions to the ride for me.

For one thing, the effort to highlight the moral rationale for addressing climate change seems more urgent than ever before.  This is why I’m so appreciative of the efforts of PAIPL:  I see a great deal of value in the particular emphasis PAIPL places on addressing the ethical dimension of the problem of climate change, a moral imperative that is consistent with the teachings of nearly every faith tradition on earth. It takes a tremendous amount of organizing to help connect the many like-minded faith leaders in Pennsylvania and provide a platform for people of all beliefs to address this issue in the many ways that they are called to do so—nearly as many ways as there are different faith traditions. (Full disclosure:  I’m in a unique position to see how much organizing is required since I’m married to Cricket!)

For another thing, this ride will be a lot bigger than the two previous rides in which I’ve participated, in 2013 and 2016. This means that logistical issues will be more complicated than what I’m used to, which in turn means a lot more work for Jon and Cricket, who masterfully handle the complicated travel arrangements and congressional visit scheduling, respectively.  As one of the more veteran riders along this time, I hope to be able to help wherever I can—even if that means stepping aside so that others who have never walked the halls of Congress to express their views can experience this awe-inspiring facet of our government.
