Yesterday Rev. Cheryl Pyrch (a member of the PA IPL Board, and a Philly PA IPL leader) attended an organizing meeting for the People’s Climate March, initiated by 350.org and now sponsored by dozens of organizations, from the Sierra Club to churches and synagogues and labor unions. The occasion is a United Nations summit on the climate crisis, called by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. It’s our chance to show the world we care, and we need to make it BIG: “to change everything, we need everyone.” It will be peaceful and inclusive — join us for this historic event!
Faith advocates have been working with world leaders for years on climate change and climate treaties. We’ve recently learned that the World Council of Churches and Religions for Peace are issuing a joint statement signed by 30 initial high-level leaders at their summit the day after the march, on September 22, so a strong and visible faith presence at the march could serve to underline that work from outside. The joint statement will be delivered to the Secretary General before the UN Summit. Check back for more on opportunities to sign supporting statements as they become available!
PA IPL is sponsoring a bus from the Mt. Airy neighborhood in Philadelphia (link to buy tickets and reserve your seat) and buses are being organized around the state. Go to www.peoplesclimate.org to learn more. Thank you to Tabernacle United Church (a PA IPL member congregation) for hosting the meeting.
