2017 Rider Profile: Karl Raynar

KAR-Carina Profile PicMeet Karl Raynar, eleventh in our get-to-know-the-riders series.  Karl also rode in 2015 and 2016.  The 2017 PA-to-DC ride  will take place  May 19-24.

This is my third year riding with Interfaith Power and Light. This year my granddaughter, Carina, will join the group for the entire ride to D.C. I look forward to sharing the beauty of this spring ride through the Pennsylvania countryside and the history along the C&O Canal. This will culminate in a civics lesson where Carina will visit our legislator in the Capitol and learn how democracy can work for the interests of people of faith.

IMG_89711Riding in Spring and witnessing nature’s rebirth makes me feel the Joy of God’s Wonderful Creation. I want to dance in the fields and play in the forest. We do this ride for the love of nature, the camaraderie that comes as we share our love for Creation, and the hope of inspiring our leaders to respond to climate change. I can’t think of anything that is more exciting than completing a 200+ mile ride at the Washington Mall with the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monuments in the background. It makes me very proud to be an American.
IMG_89891After the ride, we will break into small groups and engage our legislators in a day of dialogs. We will make them aware of a growing interfaith religious community concerned about what is happening to our Common Home and God’s Creation. We will state our opposition to short term business and development interests that want to roll back almost 50 years of legislation and regulations that have made the helped to clean our country’s air and water. We will voice our support for energy conservation and renewable energy development programs that decrease our carbon footprint. We will share our desire to protect the environment now and leave something for our children and grandchildren in the future.

This winter, Karl gathered folks—mostly from Trinity Lutheran Church and Good Shepherd Catholic Church— for a series of discussions of Laudato Si: In Care of Our Common Home by Pope Francis.  He won a minigrant from Thrivent to purchase the books (and breakfasts!) for participants!
