Meet Martin Swim, ninth in our get-to-know-the-riders series. Martin is riding with a Swim family group, and makes a cameo in his sister Janet’s profile. The 2017 PA-to-DC ride will take place May 19-24.
Although I am an avid cyclist, this will be my first-time riding with PA IPL. I found this group through my sister, Janet, who rode with them to DC before and I donated to PA IPL in her honor. She invited me to ride this year, it sounded exciting and I agreed to give it a shot!
I live in New Jersey and enjoy weekend rides along the rolling hills by the Delaware river. New Jersey does have scenic places to bike! I occasionally meet groups of students from Penn State who travelled together to NJ in a van. They come to explore the rocks along one of the roads I ride on, looking at cliffs that formed during the Triassic period.
In 2014, I rode with both my sisters on the DALMAC (Dick Allen Lansing to MACinaw) ride in Michigan. We rode in the rain for five days and camped out in tents every night but we enjoyed the family time!
This is our only planet and we must care for it. Actively going to Washington in a memorable way and speaking with our representatives about climate change is one way to contribute and be noticed – and that is exactly what PA IPL is doing with this ride.
I became politically active about five years ago when my neighbors told me about an asphalt plant being built across from an elementary school. This was unacceptable for many reasons including its location and the greenhouse gasses it would emit. This shocked me enough that I joined a grassroots group and ran for town council twice. I lost both times but I remain an active participant in local politics.
When I’m not biking, I am working as an electrical engineer. When I’m not working, I am socializing with friends and family. When I’m not socializing, I am being politically active. When I have free time, I talk to my cat, Alexandra. I think she understands me, but it’s hard to tell because she is a cat.
I hope to make a difference with this ride, if even only in a small way. If enough people make small changes, together we might be able to make a difference.
